Professional actors Sara Nichols and Kevin Theis play Ma and Pa. Their 9-year-old daughter Miranda stars as Jamie, the young hero of the story, which is set in Kentucky at Christmastime 1934, during the dustbowl. Her 6-year-old sister Gwendolyn sings at the beginning of the show.

The board voted unanimously to make District 1 Supervisor Joe Walton vice chairman of the Powhatan Board of Supervisors. The position was left vacant when District 2 Supervisor Charlie Green passed away in October. Walton will serve as vice chairman through the end of this year.

The first Kitsap County resident to die of swine flu was in good health, but within three weeks of falling ill died at Harrison Medical Center in Bremerton. Two other people have died in the county of H1N1 influenza, known as swine flu, but were not Kitsap County residents, according to the Kitsap County Health District. Charles Plummer, 59, of Hansville was a biologist for the state Department of Transportation at the department's Shoreline office, and a van pool and ferry commuter.  

A Kitsap County man in his 50s died Sunday from H1N1 influenza, said Scott Daniels of Kitsap County Health District. It's the first reported H1N1 death of a Kitsap County resident. In Kitsap County from September 19 to October 19, 2009, there have been five hospitalizations of patients with H1N1 influenza, Daniels said.  

Forty-five students from the Nixa High School choral program were recently selected as members of the South Central Missouri Music Educators Association All-District Honor Choir. The students were selected by auditions which were held at Drury University on Sept. 18 and Central High School Sept. 26. The audition process includes vocal singing, sight reading and tonal memory exercises.
